Operatic Chocolate Cake (but not Opera Cake!)

A friend celebrated his 21st last night, and asked me if I could make him a cake. He’s quite into singing and opera, so I went with a musical theme. The cake is chocolate mud cake with chocolate ganache, and the decorations are mousseline buttercream and fondant. And I was assured that it was deadly, which I’ll take as a compliment – I hope Alex got plenty to take home to keep him on the brink of a chocolate-induced coma for the next few days. 🙂


Crampton/Hickson Budget Line

This cake/graph shows the budget line for consumption of goods Crampton (on the y axis) and Hickson (on the x axis). The green curve shows where the consumer is indifferent between all points on the curve. The point where the curve intersects the budget line is the point of optimal consumption.

Or, for those of you not familiar with economics-speak, this is a graph most economists would be familiar with. Eric Crampton is the lecturer for an economics paper I took this semester, and Stephen Hickson is my tutor for the same course. Hamish and Craig also took a paper taught by Crampton, and we presented this cake to the two of them on Friday afternoon… Hopefully they enjoyed eating it as much as they appeared to enjoy discussing who is consumed more at the optimal point!


Pirate Cupcakes

I was asked to make some pirate cupcakes for a little boy’s birthday, and these cute pirate faces seemed to do the trick. The cupcakes are my chocolate cake recipe, with chocolate ganache icing under fondant decoration.

Apologies for my long absence – I have some more posts coming (two cakes in the oven right now, in fact) but have been incredibly busy with uni. Luckily, tomorrow is the last day of lectures for the year – then I have a couple of weeks to prepare for my exams. And study means procrastination, and procrastination (for me) usually means more time baking. So stay tuned…


UCanDance Topsy Turvy Cake and Cupcakes

Last weekend the University Dance Club (or UCanDance) celebrated its 15th anniversary with a dinner and big party. We decided that, since it was a birthday party and birthday parties need cake, a cake was essential. Also, because people like cake a lot, we figured adding cupcakes wouldn’t do any harm, either.

I made 48 full-sized carrot cake cupcakes with cream cheese icing, and topped all of them with a chocolate UCanDance logo – a little man dancing with a ribbon. Then I churned out another 110 mini cupcakes with just cream cheese icing. Our dining table had a lovely blanket of cake for a while… Shame we had to relinquish it. 😉

The cake was a topsy-turvy mud cake, with chocolate ganache and fondant icing. The colour scheme and flames refer to UCanDance’s biggest annual event, which is a Latin dance party called Fuego – Spanish for fire.

Last week I made a couple of cakes for a repeat customer – I think the one above looks quite cool from the side (the top just has some piping and a few more flowers on it). And for the other one I made some cute little butterflies – and I heard that the cake was delicious. 🙂 Which is of course a primary objective…


Thank you cakes

A woman contacted me to request four cakes after seeing the thank you cake I made a couple of weeks ago. I made two large chocolate cakes, and medium red velvet (with cream cheese icing) and coffee (with coffee buttercream and coffee glaze) cakes.

Forgive my lack of posting – life is very busy at the moment. However, although uni accounts for a large portion of busy-ness, a lot of it can be attributed to cake, too – so more pictures to come, hopefully tomorrow. 🙂

My Dad asked me to make a thank-you cake, so I conjured up this chocolate cake. The cake is iced in chocolate ganache, with a white chocolate wall, and fondant flowers. 🙂 Apologies for the extremely poor photograph!
